RELEASE: Northam Reups Call to Expand Medicaid in the Commonwealth
Richmond, VA – Today, Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam re-upped his call to expand Medicaid in the Commonwealth following Friday’s failure by House Republicans to hold a vote on their effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Virginia must act urgently to expand Medicaid now that there is bipartisan agreement that the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land.
In a speech at the Virginia Democratic Convention in June, the lieutenant governor stressed the economic impact of declining to expand Medicaid on Virginia’s economy: a five million dollar loss to surrounding states each day. Passing expansion will also help 400,000 more Virginians, including 15,000 veterans, gain access to affordable, quality health coverage.
Lieutenant Governor Northam has been fighting to expand Medicaid in the Commonwealth for years, including sponsoring the legislation do so in the state Senate in 2013.
